NAUPAKA
The story of Naupaka tells of Kahakai, a beautiful princess, who fell in
love with Kuahiwi, a commoner. In this version of the tale, Pele is the
antagonist, standing between the lovers. However, moved by compassion, Pele’s
brothers transform them into the flowers we know today. Kahakai chose to remain
in the mountains, while Kuahiwi stayed by the ocean. Deeply saddened by their
separation, the surrounding plants began to bloom with half-flowers the next day,
in honor of the lovers. The Naupaka, a unique flower found only in Hawai‘i, blooms
with petals that form a half-circle, symbolizing their undying love. Our duo
skaters ignite the tiny skate platform with exhilarating passion and daring tricks.
Their flawless spins, lifts, and intricate movements tell a romantic story filled
with intensity and grace, leaving the audience captivated by their electrifying
performance.
