NALU - A TRIBUTE TO SURF CULTURE
?Nalu? means both "surfable wave" and "to concentrate," a focus essential
for the Rola Bola. While the culture depicted in this act stems from a few decades
ago, the words depict the deep, centuries-old cultural and spiritual functions of
waves and how people celebrate the elements of nature by merging with them in the
form of surfing. This act embodies the exhilaration and sense of oneness with the
ocean that surfers experience when riding waves. It represents the deep cultural
and emotional connection between Hawaiians and the sea. Hawai‘i stands as the
birthplace of surfing, where the ancient Hawaiians first harnessed the power of
the ocean's waves. Hawaiians created a culture and lifestyle that would eventually
captivate the world. The Rola Bola act features a performerbalancing on a
surfboard atop a rolling cylinder, showcasing incredible precision and strength.
As they add more cylinders and daring stunts, their skillful control captivates
the audience with each moment of balance and grace..
