HINA - GODDESS OF THE MOON
Hina, the Hawaiian moon goddess, symbolizes wisdom, femininity, healing
and life's cycles, playing a vital role in Polynesian mythology. Revered for her
influence on ocean tides, she embodies harmony and balance in nature, crucial for
fishing and navigation. As Maui’s mother, her story echo’s themes of strength and
transformation. Legends tell of Hina crafting kapa cloth at ?Ka‘uiki’, where her
kapa board became a black stone. Tired of her family, she sought refuge in the
sun but retreated from its heat. Undeterred, she climbed to the moon, overcoming
injury from her husband’s attempt to stop her. Hina found eternal rest in the
moon, her image visible in its glow. The Hina Lyra Act is a beautiful and graceful
aerial hoop performance, with dancers depicting the ocean below. Featuring a
flying hoop and a blend of fluid movements and strength.
