The score of ‘Auana, composed by Evan Duffy, seamlessly blends pre-recorded and live music to create a captivating soundscape. The live performers include talented vocalists, a percussionist and a band leader proficient in Native Hawaiian instruments such as nose flute, steel guitar and ukulele. The pre-recorded portions of the score feature notable Hawaiian musicians including ukulele virtuoso Taimane Gardner, along with percussionists Tyrone Temanaha, Kyle Maria deJesus and Jesus Kawaiaea-Benitez. The prominent choral ensemble featured throughout the show includes Christina Souza, Ikaika Mendez, Joshua “Baba” Tavares and Alana Kahiapo. These musicians were recorded by local studio talents, including Michael Grande at Studio Ala Moana, Pierre Grill at Rendez-Vous Recording and Kyle Spicer at Island Sound Studios. The music and lyrics are a key storytelling medium in ‘Auana. The music is completely in ´Olelo Hawai‘i, therefore, relying on the integration of the artist’s action, music and Hawaiian language to convey the narrative of each act visually and sonically. This approach ensures the storyline can be understood by anyone, regardless of language, allowing audiences to connect emotionally to each story. Each musical composition blends traditional Hawaiian elements with modern pop influences, incorporating rhythmic patterns from various Hawaiian music styles.
