Vocalists & Songs
"This show is about a party, so I have to make the people on stage
    dance."
    — Simon Carpentier, Composer

The music could only be refined and finalized very late in the rehearsal schedule, because Carpentier needed to see the show actually played out in order to connect with the energy that was coming from the stage. And as the pacing of the show evolved, he had to be ready to adjust the tempo and orchestration of his compositions to fit the ever-changing demands of the production.
For Simon Carpentier the process of creating the high-energy music for Zumanity started by revisiting cabaret music from the past and imagining how it could be reinterpreted through the music of today. Classical music and 40s jazz were his major sources of inspiration, which he filtered through contemporary dance music to create a score that is both entirely original and completely unlike the music in any other Cirque du Soleil production. Carpentier sees the show as a journey through a succession of vignettes, each calling for a distinct musical mood and pace. And in a first for Cirque du Soleil there are several songs in the score with lyrics in recognizable languages that clearly and directly support the show’s theme, rather than the typically abstract vocals heard in other Cirque du Soleil productions. But even when there are no words Carpentier has structured most of the instrumental pieces as songs - with a verse, chorus and bridge. When Zumanity turns up the heat these songs are driven by a strong techno beat with an overlay of jazz (and more than a hint of gospel and soul), but the music turns more lyrical when the action and mood on stage become more intimate.
